About Lauren
(updated 6/2016) Lauren Dubowski is a theater artist, producer, and scholar committed to fostering international cultural exchange and understanding through the arts. This year, she has been learning firsthand about puppetry, an art form she has always been drawn to, but had little previous opportunity to explore, through her placement as an artist in residence at Papermoon Puppet Theatre in Yogyakarta, Indonesia . By the end of the Luce program, she will have also gained insight into puppetry and other performing arts communities, practices, and traditions in ten different Asian countries by attending conferences, festivals, and performances around the continent. In addition, she has expanded her interests into film by working as a development assistant at Ado Ato Pictures, a global film production company. Lauren’s previous work in theater includes serving as co-artistic director and an artistic associate of the Yale Cabaret, where she collaborated on many shows as a creative producer, deviser, director, dramaturg, and performer. She has also worked as a dramaturg with Impact Theatre/the Lucid Body Company in New York and at Yale Repertory Theatre and Yale School of Drama. She is a founding member of Guilty by Association, an international theater collective based in Vancouver, and participated in Yale School of Drama’s theater for social change project with the Baba Watoto Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Lauren also worked at Headlong Dance Theater in Philadelphia for three years to help found, launch, and manage the Headlong Performance Institute. She has written on art and culture for Culturebot.org, European Stages , the Krakow Post , and Words Without Borders; been web managing editor for Theater magazine; and worked as a grant and development writer for arts institutions and organizations in New Haven, New York, and Philadelphia.
