Alfonso Morgan-Terrero

Class of 2019-2020

About Alfonso

Born and raised in the Bronx of Immigrant parents from the islands of Jamaica and Dominican Republic, and graduating in the top 5% of his class from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, Alfonso Morgan-Terrero currently works full time as an English Teacher at Success Academy: Harlem North Central Middle School. He teaches two classes, comprising 57 students in total, the majority of whom come from low income communities in the neighborhoods of Harlem. Alfonso studied filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in May 2018. Between his junior and senior years at NYU, Alfonso spent three years away from the campus, volunteering with communities in the Caribbean, South America and North Africa. He also spent a few weeks in Xi’an, China, volunteering at a special education center. While abroad, he also wrote and filmed, all while in search of a greater understanding of and connection with communities around the world. His thesis film  Champions , about unrequited love between two baseball players growing up in the Bronx, was selected as a finalist for the George H. Heinneman Post Production Grant, one of the University’s most prestigious prizes. In addition to being a native Spanish speaker, Alfonso is proficient in Mandarin Chinese, which he studied during all four years at NYU. In 2017 he placed second at the University’s Annual Chinese Language Speech Competition. Alfonso is actively seeking opportunities to further his career as a global filmmaker.  For Alfonso filmmaking is and has always been the essential form through which he understands and views the world. Every element of his upbringing, of his existence, has been interpreted through the cinematic filter. His aspiration is to tell stories of people in their most fulfilled, true and vulnerable state.
