About Jake
Jake Gómez is a writer and communications professional from the outskirts of Los Angeles, CA. He holds a BA from Colgate University in Middle Eastern Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies, where he received the 1819 Award, the institution’s highest graduate honor, and was a member of the Benton Scholars Program.
Jake’s fascination sits at the intersection of journalism, civic engagement, and narrative strategy: what do modern, trustworthy avenues for connection look like in an increasingly disconnected world? In college, he became a founding member of Newsreel (featured in Forbes and CNN), an audience-first media platform that offers younger generations a more intentional way to engage with news beyond the overwhelming social media. Over several years, he helped shape Newsreel’s editorial vision, build its partnership strategy, and experiment with creative news delivery formats.
Alongside his journalistic pursuits, Jake worked at Washington, DC-based communications firms supporting pro-democracy nonprofits and mission-driven organizations at both national and international levels. He developed messaging and editorial strategies for organizations operating across civil society. He penned op-eds for nonprofit leaders published in U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, and UN Dispatch, among other outlets. While he valued the work, it also left him wanting to spend more time on the ground, pursuing his own editorial questions and learning directly from journalists working in different political and cultural contexts.
That impulse led him to a Fulbright year in Tunisia in 2024, where he supported the editorial work of the Observatory for Food Sovereignty and the Environment. He helped launch its publication, Mawshaur, which published reporting on social entrepreneurship in the Tunis Medina, and collaborated with local journalists on a range of editorial projects and civic initiatives.
In his free time, Jake enjoys dancing, cooking, and learning languages.
